Clay Tips: Centering Clay on the Pottery Wheel and Some Common Issues

This video is the second in the “Clay Tips” series.  In this video, I show how to center clay on the wheel.  This is not an easy task to learn.  There are lots of places to make mistakes.  I break down the process including showing how I hold my hands.  Hopefully this video will help those who are learning to center, how to do it… and for those who are just curious on how it’s done, hope you enjoy!  Click here to view on youtube where you can give the video a thumbs up, subscribe to my channel and leave comments.

Clay Tips: 3 Methods On Opening Centered Clay on the Pottery Wheel

This video is the third in the “Clay Tips” series.  In this video, I show how I open up centered clay on the wheel. I show 3 different methods. The first is my least favorite but one I see many people use. The second is the method I use when making pieces that have a flat bottom and straight sides – such as mugs and vases. The third method, and my favorite, I use for pieces that would have a curve such as a bowl or that are flat such as a platter or plate.

Clay Tips: How to Throw a Cylinder on the Pottery Wheel

This video is the forth in the “Clay Tips” series.   In this video, I show one of the most important things to learn when throwing on the pottery wheel – how to throw a cylinder.  Most pots (except for flatter pieces like plates) start with a cylinder.  If you can throw a cylinder, you can make most anything you want.  Here I show how I pull up a cylinder with even walls and little wasted clay.  I show how I position my hands and what I am doing to pull up the clay.   I also talk about some common issues that people run in to.
